Matauranga Literacy

Competence in Literacy gives students access to the understanding, knowledge, and skills they need to participate fully in the social, cultural, political, and economic life of New Zealand and the wider world. To be successful participants, our students need to be effective oral, written, and visual communicators who are able to think critically and in depth. In Literacy our students will use strategies that help them make sense of what they see, hear and read as well as communicate clearly in oral, visual and written form.
Ilminster Intermediate achieves this through promoting the skills of Reading, Viewing, Speaking, Writing and Presenting.

Matauranga Numeracy

In Numeracy, students will focus on strengthening basic number operations, mental calculations and procedural fluency. Numeracy teachers work with students in small groups to identify and address misconceptions, and ensure students understand the concepts behind the tricks, rules and formulae.
Problem solving is a major focus and students are taught to work collaboratively, and engage in in-depth mathematical discussions to reach their solutions using a range of
strategies.
Our goal is to grow young mathematicians who can confidently understand and use appropriate mathematical terminology, recognize patterns and relationships, and apply these to find a solution.
